From March to August 2016, experts were investigating around 300 infrastructural objects in Volozhin district on being compliant with accessibility requirements, and worked out recommendations for their improvement. Among the objects investigated were 18 farmsteads.
Complete investigation on accessibility was being conducted in 10 of Volozhin district from March 1th till August 1th. For this purpose 8 experts were invited - lawyers, social workers, specialists in architecture, rural tourism, representatives of Public Association Belarusian Association of People with Disabilities. They were assisted by of the farmsteads owners, representatives of local authorities and NGOs, journalists, volunteers who had attended the thematic workshop and learnt about the crucial components of accessible environment.
The overall number of the investigated objects amounted to 280 - foremost, buildings and complexes that could be potentially used by tourists with disabilities. The ones that made the list were transport facilities, buildings operating for local authorities, social services (post offices, libraries, hospitals, schools and shops), cultural and historic objects, as well as 18 farmsteads. For each of the object the experts were filing in the tailored questionnaire, marking the availability of rampants, parking spaces for specialized automobile transport, wide entrances into buildings, assembly of the rooms, furniture and equipment on the entrance level (for the hotels).
According to the results of the investigation, most of the infrastructural objects have been claimed to have a good potential for being adapted for people with disabilities without excessive financial expenses. For instance, in some libraries or shops the only improvements to be introduced are constructing (or re-constructing) a rampant, or widening the entrance. The monitoring was one of the initiative in Volozhin without barriers project.
The outputs of the investigation and experts’ recommendations will enable improvements in the district. They will lay the basis for the Plan of activities for improving the infrastructure and quality of social and recreational services provided for people with disabilities in Volozhin district The project Working group will be responsible for its elaboration and implementation - the Group is comprised of representatives of the region executive committee, NGOs, experts having been conducting the investigation.
