On April 27, Ivan Shchadranok, Head of Interakcia Foundation, signed the Partnership Agreement with the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission. Interakcia will be spreading the principles of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy that provides local authorities with a framework to deal with CO2 emissions. So far, 11 Belarusian cities and towns have supported this initiative launched by the European Commission.
The overall number of the Covenant’s signatories has already exceeded 6000 cities and town from all parts of Europe. Their governments have to decrease CO2 emissions from motor vehicles and enterprises by 40% until 2030. To reach that aim, they are promoting energy efficiency technologies (such as new, efficient street lamps), using alternative sources of energy, and propagating more frugal attitudes to resources.
To fulfill the requirements of the Covenant of Mayors, local governments have to prepare and implement their tailored sustainable energy and climate action plans. Also, officials have to present measures that will enable their cities and towns to mitigate and adopt to the consequences of climate changes, while ensuring that their residents have affordable and secure sources of energy. As a new Covenant Supporter, Interakcia will be promoting such activities and measures among those Belarusian cities that have already joined the Covenant of Mayors or are going to do that. Today, there are eleven Belarusian Covenant’s signatories: Beryoza, Braslav, Brest, Chausy, Glubokoe, Kobryn, Novogrudok, Oshmyany, Polotsk, Pukhovichi, Rogachev.
In addition, Interakcia will be facilitating the exchange of experience and information between those local governments, while ensuring their smooth cooperation with the Covenant of Mayors Office, as well as presenting the project in the national and regional media and at various events. Interakcia will make the first presentation of the Covenant of Mayors and the changes it can bring about on May 12, in Vitebsk, at the international conference Energy and Resources Saving 2016, which will be held within the framework of the 5th International Economic Forum Innovations. “Our new status – Covenant Supporter – reflects that experience in the field of sustainable energy development that Interakcia amassed for ten years of its work. We provided expertise for Polotsk’s Sustainable Energy Action Plan, and it was Polotsk that became the very first Belarusian signatory of the Covenant of Mayors. And now, in cooperation with Polotsk government, we are coordinating an urban mobility project that aims to reduce CO2 from motor vehicles and a project that will result in a modernized lighting system,” – noted Ivan Shchadranok, Head of Interakcia Foundation.
